中医谓人体阳气的根本。宋范成大《问天医赋》:"元阳之气，可斤可两。"俗亦谓男子的精气。
元阳就是肾阳，又称真阳、真火、命门之火、先天之火。是肾脏生理功能的动力，也是人体生命活动力的源泉。与肾阴相对而言，是肾阴功能活动的体现，对人体各脏腑的生理活动有温煦与推动作用。
