赤斤，蒙古语，谓耳朵，明初设赤斤蒙古卫，正德年间，为土鲁番所破，其部内徒。清朝钱大昕所著 《十驾斋养新录·蒙古语》：“ 元人以本国语命名……或取形相，如你敦者，眼也；如赤斤者，耳也。”另一说法为，明清两代设置的卫所名，一作赤金。
